Ultra-ambitious at the dawn of the new season, the Mavericks have faced the harsh reality of the market in recent days. After several failures already suffered recently, the Texans could again see a good target at the level of the backcourt escape them.
After two successive eliminations in the first round of the playoffs, their recent qualification for the Western Conference Finals has boosted the enthusiasm of the front office. In full progress, the Mavericks have decided to approach the offseason aggressively, so as to further strengthen the supporting cast of Luka Doncic. They wasted no time in doing so.
Even before the market started to agitate, Dallas thus obtained the arrival of Christian Wood from Houston. A major move to expand the interior sector, which was followed by the signing of JaVale McGee as a free agent. But apart from these two beautiful recruits, the summer of the Mavs is intended for the moment to be rather marked by disappointments.
Mavericks already out of the game for Collin Sexton?
Priority file for the Mavericks on the sidelines of free agency, Jalen Brunson has decided to leave the franchise to sign a lucrative contract in New York. A few days later, it was Goran Dragic who snubbed their interest in favor of the Bulls. Never two without three, since another guard targeted by the Texans should slip through their fingers, as reported by Chris Fedor in his podcast The Wine & Gold Talk :
The Dallas Mavericks have been rumored to be among the teams interested in Collin Sexton after losing Jalen Brunson. They don’t have cap space, so they should sign-and-trade with the Cavaliers to sign him. However, I am told that the Cavs are not really seduced by the elements that Dallas would be ready to send them in return in this case.
At the end of the contract with Cleveland, Sexton has so far not yet received an extension offer that meets his expectations. The track of a sign-and-trade therefore remains plausible, and several teams would have positioned themselves to welcome it under these conditions. It would seem, however, that the Mavs are a step behind their announced competitors, namely the Pacers, Pistons, Spurs and Wizards.
Determined to play the leading roles in the West in the coming months, they logically do not wish to part with important parts of their workforce. Therefore, difficult to convince the Cavaliers to give them Collin Sexton, simply in exchange for second-tier players and a few draft picks. We will therefore certainly have to look elsewhere to support Doncic!
In addition to the loss of Jalen Brunson, the Mavericks therefore risk suffering a bitter failure in their pursuit of his designated replacement, namely Collin Sexton. Decidedly, not easy to offer Luka Doncic the perfect backcourt companion!
