They open their arms to them. Inspired by the speeches of “deserting” students who reject the current system, committed companies are calling on these young graduates to join them. A way for them to accelerate their transformation by being challenged on a daily basis. The call to “to desert” jobs “destroyers” launched by several students from the Agro Paris Tech engineering school has caused a lot of ink to flow. In a column published in Les Echos, Pierre Verzat, the president of Syntec, the professional organization of engineers, regrets a “broken dialogue” Between “two generations perceived as antinomic”. If the reaction is strong, it is because recruiters are already having difficulty finding qualified profiles on the themes of climate and sustainable development. “The necessary workforce will grow by 20% by 2025” indicates Pierre Verza, citing a study by the “Prospective Observatory of Professions and Qualifications” which concludes that currently the number of graduates oriented on climate issues is “grossly insufficient”. The recruitment firm Birdeo, which specializes in jobs with a positive impact, makes the same observation: “We are in a transition situation where demand is greater than supply.”

The doors are open

“The subjects are more and more technical, for example in agrifood about agricultural regeneration, in finance about extra-financial performance… There are more and more dual-hatted positions, such as sustainable purchasing, sustainable marketing. There are also committed companies, for example labeled B Corp, or companies with a mission, which seek consistency of value in recruitment” says Birdeo.

The Ecotone company, which owns several organic brands such as “Bjorg” or “Clipper” teas, does not hesitate to open its doors to convince students of its commitments, inviting students to discuss with each of the employees and experts of the company. It also highlights its labels and certifications, such as the B Corp label. “Students today are more attentive and more specific in their questions” notes Ecotone.

Once in office, the company continues to encourage discussion and questioning. “For example, every month we have conferences or webinars on the subjects of Biodiversity and food, or food topics related to current events” explains Ecotone, also highlighting its “Biodiversity day”, one day a year when all European offices explore solutions around a specific subject. The company also wants to promote the desires of employees by offering them two days of work that can be dedicated to a charitable activity and indicates to listen carefully “all the good ideas that these new and new employees can have and which make companies grow”.

Benefits for businesses

Committed young people have a lot to contribute to companies. “In CSR positions, you need people who embody the approach” explains the director of Birdeo. For her, optimism and tenacity are the two main qualities for success, explaining “that we still have to fight”. However, she brings a nuance to the militant posture, affirming that the approach must be collective. She is looking for people with “great popularization capacity” in order to “to get everyone on board”.

The director of Birdeo observes “real awareness” companies as job seekers, with an acceleration in 2019, the year of the fires in Australia. For her, the current young graduates are a “native environmental generation”endowed with a vast general culture on the environment and “able to make things happen”. An observation shared by Ecotone, which “understands the strong desire for bifurcation” but calls on students to “to bifurcate the companies themselves, and to change the system from the inside”.
